SPICED TRAIL MIX

Before hitting the trails, pack up this protein rich snack to go. Or keep it at your desk for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up. 

ingredients

  • 1 Pound (4 cups) Nuts, such as pecans (preferred), walnuts and/or hazelnuts
  • 1 Teaspoon (6 grams) Table Salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 - 1/2 Teaspoon (1-2 grams) Chili Powder
  • 1 1/2 Teaspoons (5 grams) Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/2 Teaspoon (2 grams) Ground Nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons (.7 oz/20 grams) Brown Sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter, melted
  • 4.5 oz (1 cup) Dried Fruit, such as raisins, cranberries, or cherries

the method

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread nuts on 1 or 2 baking sheets and toast in oven until fragrant. After 10 minutes, stir, and toast for additional 5 to 10 minutes if necessary.

In a small mixing bowl, combine spices with salt and sugar. Add toasted nuts to large bowl. Stir in melted butter. Add in spice mixture and dried fruit. Combine well.

Transfer back to baking sheets. Toast for an additional 4 to 5 minutes or until you can smell the spices. Remove from oven and cool before enjoying. Store in a mason jar or air tight container.
